Getting to Castello di Petrata & Local Transportation

TL;DR: Getting to Assisi is relatively straightforward — and the concierge (see the FAQ page!) can help coordinate flights, trains, cars, and airport transfers if you want a bit of help.

Flying To Italy

The two most convenient international airports are:

✈️ Rome (Fiumicino – FCO): Rome is the most common entry point for international travelers and offers the most direct flight options.

✈️ Florence (FLR): Florence is another great option, especially if you’re planning to spend time there before the wedding.

From either airport, you can take the train, rent a car, or book a private transfer. More info on each option below.

Taking the Train

Taking the train can be a convenient option if you’re comfortable with rail travel, especially if you’re coming from Rome or Florence and don’t want to drive.

  • There are regular train routes from Rome and Florence to Assisi.

  • The tripis generally straightforward, but may involve one connection.

  • Once you arrive at the Assisi train station, a taxi or transfer will be needed to reach your hotel or the venue.

The concierge can also help buy train tickets or provide additional directions / guidance.

Renting a Car

Renting a car can be a great option if you like flexibility, plan to explore Umbria / Tuscany, or are staying outside Assisi’s city center.

Driving in Italy isn’t wildly different from the U.S. - highways are generally easy to navigate and well-marked. That said, you should expect some road construction and narrow streets once you’re in smaller towns.

A few practical notes:

  • Having your own car will be especially helpful if you are staying in countryside villas or farmhouses.

  • Many rental cars are manual transmission; automatics are usually available for a bit more money, but you should definitely book them in advance.

  • If you’re renting from the Florence Airport, Hertz is the best option as it is located right outside baggage claim in the main airport.

  • If you are staying inside Assisi’s city walls, note that some areas are pedestrian-only — hotels or the concierge will let you know where to park.

Be sure to get an international driver’s license if you are considering this option (this can be completed in one day via AAA, is about $20, and does not require any kind of test - you just need to show your US Drivers license).

Private Transfers

If you’d rather not deal with driving at all, private transfers arranged through the concierge are a very easy alternative — especially after a long travel day.

The concierge can arrange transfers from Rome or Florence airports and pickups / dropoffs from the Assisi train station.

Getting Around During the Wedding

Transportation to and from Castello di Petrata will be coordinated for the wedding events, including group and private transfers as needed.

If you’re staying further out or have specific timing needs, taxis and vans can be easily arranged via the concierge. They can also help you arrange taxis or transportation for other activities and excursions as needed.
