What to do around Assisi?
Assisi has plenty to offer. Below are a few ideas if you’re looking for inspiration, and the concierge can always help with planning.
Wander Assisi’s Historic Center
First things first: walk around Assisi! Assisi’s historic center is compact, beautiful, and ideal for wandering around with frequent stops for a coffee, gelato, or an Aperol spritz.
A must-see is the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, one of the most important religious sites in Italy and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built in the 13th century to honor Saint Francis (Assisi’s most famous resident), the Basilica is known for its stunning frescoes by artists like Giotto and Cimabue, and for its peaceful, layered architecture. Even if you’re not a “church person,” it’s well worth a visit.

Head Up to the Castle Ruins
If you’re up for a bit of uphill walking (or a short taxi ride), head to Rocca Maggiore, the medieval fortress ruins that sit at the very top of Assisi.
The climb is rewarded with sweeping views over the town and the Umbrian countryside, and it’s one of the best spots in the area for photos, sunset watching, or …you guessed it…grabbing an Aperol Spritz in the small cafe outside the castle entrance.
Explore Monte Subasio & Subasio Park
Right outside Assisi is Monte Subasio Regional Park, a protected natural area with walking paths and scenic views over the Umbrian countryside.
You don’t need to be an intense hiker to enjoy it; even a short stroll or drive into the park is a great way to reset and take in the landscape. The park is open year-round and should be free to enter.
Eat, Drink, Repeat
There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and wine bars throughout Assisi, and the surrounding countryside is known for robust red wines, olive oil, and truffles. If you’d like something more structured than wandering into wherever looks good (also a great plan), the concierge can help arrange tastings and experiences.
Let the Concierge Do the Planning
If you want to explore a bit further — or just prefer someone else to handle the logistics — the concierge can help organize experiences like:
Wine tastings
Olive oil tastings
Cooking classes
Truffle hunts
Guided tours of Assisi and surrounding hill towns
You can request activities individually, for couples or groups, and they’ll take care of coordinating everything directly with you. Exploring Further Afield
If you’re extending your trip, Assisi is a great base for exploring more of Italy.
Umbria is right at your doorstep and easy to explore by car or guided tour. The region is known for small hill towns, countryside drives, and local food, making it ideal for relaxed day trips from Assisi.
Florence is about 2–2.5 hours from Assisi by train or car and is a great option if you’re interested in art, architecture, and food. Florence also serves as a gateway to Tuscany, where you can explore wineries and countryside towns either by renting a car or booking a tour.
Rome is approximately 2.5–3 hours from Assisi, depending on whether you travel by train or car. It’s a good option if you’re interested in history, museums, and major landmarks, and works well either before or after time in Umbria.
All of these destinations pair easily with a stay in Assisi, and the concierge can help you think through timing, transportation, and routing if that’s helpful.
